Our History
Leon Medical Centers, is a family-owned business founded by Benjamin Leon, Jr., a 50-year veteran of the healthcare industry. It opened its doors at the first Location, Miami, in 1996. Since then it has grown into a comprehensive outpatient healthcare system that includes seven medical centers among other healthcare services.
1996
On August 3, 1996, Benjamín León, Jr. inaugurated the first Leon Medical Center on 27th Avenue and SW 1st Street in Miami.
1997
February 1997, Leon Medical Centers opened its second medical center in Westchester on Coral Way and SW 88th Avenue. Leon Medical Centers opened its third facility in October 1997 in East Hialeah at 445 E. 25th Street.
1999
On May 27th, 1999, the first Leon Hospital Service Center was opened in Mercy Hospital to better serve our patients by providing them with continued attention and service.
2002
Our Hialeah Hospital Leon Hospital Service Center opened in 2002 offering added convenience and comfort for our patients in Hialeah.
2003
The Bird Road Center, established in October 2003 on Bird Road and SW 115th Avenue, was built with the same comfort, amplitude, and luxury as its predecessors in Miami, Westchester, and East Hialeah.
2004
At the end of 2004, Leon Medical Centers opened its third Leon Hospital Service Center in Kendall Regional Medical Center to assist patients and offer guidance during visits to the hospital.
2006
In 2006, Leon Medical Centers earned the “Excellence in Healthcare Award” from the South Florida Business Journal for its excellence in medical care.
2007
Opened in early 2007, the fifth center in Leon Medical Centers’ trajectory is located in West Hialeah facing the Palmetto Expressway on 20th Avenue and 64th Street.
2008
In May 2008, Leon Medical Centers and the León family made a commitment to Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine to establish the Benjamín León, Jr. Family Center for Geriatric Research and Education, an Eminent Scholars Chair and use of Leon Medical Centers’ medical facilities as a teaching institution for medical school students. The family made a $10 million gift to FIU, which received matching funds from the state.
2009
The September/October 2009 issue of Health Affairs, a national health policy publication based in Washington, DC, featured Leon Medical Centers as one of the four best healthcare institutions in the nation in an article entitled “American Medical Home Runs” written by Arnold Milstein, M.D. The Kendall Center, which opened in October 2009, has 75,000 square feet of dedicated medical space. The impressive four-story building is located on Kendall Drive and 125th Avenue. The Flagler Center, opened in October 2009, sits at the intersection of 79th Avenue and 2nd Street near Mall of the Americas.
2010
In 2010, Florida International University’s first graduating class of the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine began clinical rotations at Leon Medical Centers. The South Florida Business Journal named Leon Medical Centers “Healthcare Institution of the Year” in 2010 during its annual “Excellence in Healthcare Awards.”
2011
In May 2011, Leon Medical Centers opened another Welcome Center at “Metropolitan Hospital” to expand the care and comfort of patients attending the hospital for treatments.
2012
In January 2012, Leon Medical Centers opened the Leon Healthy Living Centers to help our patients increase their physical activity and maintain their functional independence. In October 2012, Leon Medical Centers made a contribution of $5,000,000 to Miami Dade College and established the Benjamin León School of Nursing, one of the largest nursing schools in the United States.
2016
In 2016, Leon Medical Centers launched Leon Home Medical, a new department established to provide our patients with a wide variety of home medical equipment that will help them improve their quality of life and daily activities.
In August 2016, Leon Medical Centers announced a $2.5 million donation to the Jackson Health Foundation, the fundraising arm of Jackson Health System for naming right of the new fourth floor of the Jackson South Community Hospital. The gift also includes future naming rights for a unit at Jackson West in Doral. Also in the year 2016, Leon Medical Centers remolded our East Hialeah Center. The building is now more than 64,000 square feet and has ample parking. Additionally, the center has a second building with 37,000 square feet that houses the new Leon Healthy Living Center, physical therapy and a spacious dental department with the most modern equipment available.
In August 2016, LMC opened a new parking garage for the Kendall Center. This is a modern parking lot with 6 floors, to make your visit more comfortable and pleasant. LMC also opened a parking garage for the Flagler Center, with five floors intended for parking. LMC is always thinking about you and your comfort.
2018
